Making Arrival Better
How a comprehensive wayfinding system reshaped orientation in Brepark’s parking garages.
Where do I park?
Who owns this space?
What do I get for my money?
And how do I find my car again?
These were the questions at the start of our work for Brepark’s parking garages. Questions that any wayfinding system must answer – clearly, quickly, and without detours.
In 2009, we were commissioned to fundamentally redesign the existing signage system.
More than wayfinding
Early in the process it became clear: a functioning wayfinding system cannot be conceived in isolation. Orientation, naming, design, and spatial experience are closely interconnected.
As a result, the project went beyond signage alone. Alongside the new wayfinding system, we developed a new name for the garages (BreparkHaus), a wordmark, a coherent system of symbols and pictograms, clear color schemes, and a revised lighting concept.
A reference building as a test case
One selected parking garage served as a pilot project. The aim was to demonstrate what could be achieved through design alone – without extensive structural modifications.
The pictogram system translates Brepark’s complex information into concise, easily understood symbols. Special services such as accessible parking, comfort parking, or bicycle spaces are clearly communicated and immediately legible.
Distinctive colors as well as clearly defined parking and circulation zones structure the space and reliably guide users through the BreparkHaus.
Designed to scale, implemented long term
The result proved so convincing that Brepark decided to roll out the system across all of its parking garages.
The collaboration continues to this day and includes the ongoing development and adaptation of the system to different locations and requirements.
In short
The complete redesign of a scalable wayfinding system for parking garages – functional, clear, and built to last.
